Google Cloud Platform Enters The Indian Subcontinent

Google announced the availability of its cloud platform in Mumbai, one of the first regions in India. The new region has three zones for higher availability and redundancy. This move officially marks the entry of Google Cloud Platform into the Indian subcontinent.

The Mumbai region joins Taipei and Singapore that are already available for Asia Pacific customers. Starting today, customers can launch resources in ap-south1 region that comes with three independent zones – ap-south1-a, ap-south1-b and ap-south1-c. Google claims that the new region will significantly reduce the latency for end users in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Mumbai cities.

Even before launching dedicated region in Mumbai, Google had three Points of Presence (PoP) covering north, west, and southern part of India. These PoP locations serve as the edge locations for content delivery and network routing. Google has partnered with GPX and Tata Communications to offer dedicated interconnect and peering for enterprise data centers. This partnership enables customers to sign up for a dedicated, private network connecting their facility with the GCP Mumbai region. GCP users in India can now pay bills in the local currency.

Google made some of the most essential services of GCP available in the Mumbai region. Customers can deploy applications in PaaS (App Engine), IaaS (Compute Engine) and CaaS (Container Engine) while consuming object storage (Cloud Storage) and block storage (Persistent Disk). Core networking services including DNS, load balancer, VPN and virtual networking are available as well.
