How Can Enterprises Leverage Serverless Computing Platforms

Serverless computing is not only the latest buzz word of the industry, but also one of the fastest growing cloud service delivery models. Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft offer serverless computing models in their respective public cloud environments. During the last two quarters, we have seen multiple startups announcing open source serverless computing projects.

Serverless computing is also called as Function as a Service or FaaS, in which developers upload code snippets packaged as modular functions. These functions are invoked in response to events generated by a variety of external sources such as databases, storage containers, streams, and even user interfaces.

Is FaaS ready for enterprise customers with hybrid deployments? Before addressing that, let’s explore the deployment model of serverless computing platforms.

FaaS is fundamentally different from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). In IaaS, customers are expected to spin up virtual machines to deploy binaries of their application. When dealing with PaaS, developers deploy codebase of an entire application to the cloud platform. When targeting FaaS, developers don’t think of an entire application. They only write, test, and deploy one function at a time. These functions are assembled together to deliver a unique feature or functionality of an application. So, a function is to FaaS what a VM is to IaaS.

Customers benefit from FaaS due to its fine-grained deployment model and per-second pricing model. Apart from reuse of code, FaaS drives better utilization of resources. That’s one of the reasons why web-scale companies such as Expedia and Netflix are embracing Serverless computing.
