If Containers Are The New VMs, Hyper Aims To Be The New IaaS

Containers are leading us into the third wave of computing where the fundamental unit of computing is shifting from virtual machines to containers. With the core infrastructure including hypervisors, operating systems, and management software getting optimized for containers, the next generation of web-scale, cloud-native applications will be running in containerized environments. Key players of this ecosystem – hypervisor vendors, OS software vendors, and infrastructure providers – are getting ready to deal with this transformation.

Riding high on this new wave of computing model is Hyper, a New York-based startup that’s attempting to disrupt the IaaS market with rapid provisioning of containers in the public cloud. Hyper’s uniqueness lies in its hypervisor that is tailor-made for containers. Dubbed as HyperContainer, this open source project aims at converging VMs and containers. While promising the speed and agility of containers with the security and isolation of VMs, customers get best of both worlds. HyperContainer eliminates the need of running an OS only for hosting containers. Instead, it contains the core of OS integrated with the hypervisor, which reduces the overhead involved in dealing with multiple layers.

Hyper’s public cloud is based on bare metal infrastructure and HyperContainer. Developers can launch containers running within dedicated VMs in just a few seconds. Thanks to its compatibility with Docker, developers can launch container images stored in Docker Hub by following the same workflow of deploying and managing containers in their development environment. When I first encountered Hyper, I felt that it was Docker done the right way.
