Amazon Ups The Ante on Containerization and Microservices

Amazon has unveiled new developer offerings at AWS re:Invent , its annual user conference. Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO at Amazon has announced a set of new features for EC2 Container Service (ECS), Amazon’s container management platform, and Lambda, the serverless platform on AWS.

Amazon is open sourcing the core components of ECS to enable on-premise developers to use the same workflow. Dubbed as Blox, the open source project contains cluster management, container orchestration, and support for the custom scheduler. Amazon is shipping a scheduler as a reference implementation that developers can extend. Customers can integrate 3rd party schedulers such as Mesos and Marathon with Blox. Developers can use Blox locally for development and testing before moving the containerized workloads to production environment running on ECS in the cloud.

Last month, at KubeCon, Microsoft had announced that it is open-sourcing the technology behind its container management platform, ACS. Google’s Containers as a Service (CaaS), GKE is based on the open source Kubernetes. With Amazon announcing Blox, developers now have access to the source code of all the mainstream container management platforms.

Amazon ECS would also support Microsoft Windows in the future releases. The service also gets additional capabilities in the form of event streaming, task placement engine, and label-based placement. These features will provide fine-grained control for deploying containerized workloads across multiple availability zones.
