10 New Product Categories Created Exclusively For The Container Era – Part 1

Containers are emerging as the most disruptive technology of this decade. From platform vendors to early-stage startups to large enterprises, every company is getting impacted by containerization. Both the supply and demand side of the industry is gearing up to deal with this phenomenon.

When compared to the previous trends like virtualization, containerization is moving at much faster pace. Vendors are responding quickly to capitalize on this opportunity. Even though most of the customers are still trying to understand the real value of containers and the impact of the technology, there are multiple offerings in the marketplace to manage the new breed of containerized applications.

Having learned the lessons from virtualization, existing vendors, and emerging companies are competing to offer tools and technologies to enterprise customers for managing containerized workloads.

Here are ten such product categories that are created exclusively for the container era within the last two years. Some of them have the potential of turning into a million dollar opportunities for the software vendors.

 1. Container OS

Operating systems are the first to get impacted by containerization. With containers moving to the mainstream, their role is changing significantly. The OS is getting reduced to a wafer-thin layer that is just enough to bring up the container management software. All other processes and applications are packaged as containers that are managed by the runtime. Except for the kernel and a set of bare minimum drivers, nothing much is expected from the OS. Traditional monolithic operating systems are considered as overhead in the context of containers. The new generation of operating systems are lean and mean, lightweight, and minimalistic that are optimized for containers.

Some of the popular flavors of containerized operating systems include CoreOSSnappy Ubuntu CoreRed Hat Atomic HostsWindows Nano ServerVMware Photon OS, and RancherOS.
