Amazon Takes Shot at Microsoft and IBM With Its Latest Analytics Service

Amazon Kinesis Analytics, announced at AWS Summit New York is the latest addition to the AWS Kinesis family of streaming services. This stream processing service, which plugs a significant gap in the AWS data services portfolio, enables customers to analyze streaming data in real time. With the introduction of this service, Amazon becomes a viable alternative to Azure Stream Analytics and IBM Streaming Analytics offerings.

Real-time stream analytics are certainly a big deal for customers running IoT, gaming, and AdTech solutions in the cloud. It provides an opportunity to query the never ending stream of data, which is always in motion. For example, with stream analytics, Uber can easily find out how many taxis crossed a specific tollgate in the last 10 minutes. Also known as fast data, real time streams are becoming an essential element of enterprise Big Data strategy.

Big Data scenarios typically demand datasets be processed in real-time as well as in batch mode. In the financial sector, banks need to analyze a stream of credit card transactions in real-time to find fraudulent transactions. At the same time, the data is stored in NoSQL database which is processed by Hadoop clusters to find spending patterns of customers. Typically, this kind of data flows through two different routes – hot path, and cold path. Hot path analytics deal with real-time data points while cold path analytics are meant for long-term, batch processing. With Kinesis Analytics, Amazon essentially added the hot path analytics service. The cold path analytics is provided through Amazon S3, Amazon Elastic Map Reduce, and Amazon Redshift.
