PHP on Windows Azure Session at OSI Days 2010

Last week I presented at the Open Source India Days 2010 in Chennai. My session was about running PHP web applications on Windows Azure. A day before my session, on 19th September, Vijay Rajagopalan from the Interoperability team at Redmond announced the availability of various tools for PHP developers targeting Windows Azure.

This announcement was significant for the PHP community as they now have a serious toolkit to target the Windows Azure platform. While there are many logical choices of Cloud Computing platforms for Java and .NET developers, LAMP developers do not have an ideal PaaS offering to deploy their applications. Through this announcement, Microsoft is providing LAMP developers an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of Cloud platform like elasticity, pay-by-use, self-service and programmability.

My session had 3 parts; Part 1 was introducing the key concepts of Windows Azure including Compute, Storage and the Management services. Part 2 was about packaging and deploying PHP web applications on Windows Azure. The last part of the session was consuming the Azure Storage from a typical hosted PHP application. It was difficult for me to cover all the concepts in the limited 45 minute slot. But I did my best to cover all the aspects and based on what I heard from the audience, the session was well received. One of my demos that I showcased included true Cloud interoperability scenario. I hosted WordPress running within a PHP CGI Web Role hosted on Windows Azure talking to the MySQL instance running within Relational Database Service hosted on Amazon Web Services. My other demos included a Jukebox application that consumed the Azure Storage API. The slide deck that I presented can be downloaded from the talks section of my website.
